Chorister Auditions for St Nicholas Schola Cantorum, Sunday 21st September, 2014
This new choir (established September, 2012) offers an exciting new musical opportunity for the children of Galway:
- Be part of an 800 year old tradition
- Receive highly specialized vocal and musical training
- Participate regularly in services and sing at special events
For centuries, children have received a priceless musical education as choristers of cathedrals and churches. Galway’s ancient collegiate church was no exception; from 1486, the college vicars were responsible for the training of boys to sing at the daily services. Whilst the college no longer exists, there is now a new opportunity in Galway for children to develop high-level musical skills through membership of the new St Nicholas Schola Cantorum. The unique training of the church chorister has been the foundation for many brilliant careers in music.
Who is eligible?
Boys and girls aged 8-14, from all religious traditions and none
Who are the leaders?
The Choristers are trained by Mark Duley, Director of the Schola Cantorum and organist of St Nicholas’, with assistance from other tutorial staff and supported by a parents’ committee.

The choristers meet weekly on Sunday afternoons for two hours (including classes for vocal training, sight singing and theory as well as a full rehearsal), and sing at the principal Sunday morning service up to once a month. All choristers are expected to attend all rehearsals and events.
